The government of Luis Lacalle Pou, armed at the point of five political flags, cuts tapes of great works begun during the administration of Tabaré Vázquez, some even conceived during the previous term in charge of José Mujica. Such is the case of the new headquarters of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of the Republic, which began to be erected in 2016 on land donated by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries in the nineties and whose ribbon was cut on November 23 with the presence of Lacalle Pou and the mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse.
A similar case is that of the Udelar University Residence in Tacuarembó, whose initial project was published in 2018 and which, again, was inaugurated by the current president.
Other works that are rather the total merit of this Executive Branch have other dimensions and scope, and are not exactly large building installations or large-scale structures.
air conditioners
In February 2021, the vice president of UTE, Julio Luis Sanguinetti, inaugurated the commissioning of air conditioners in Parque Minas, a vacation center for the institution’s employees and the general public. “The park is beautiful, the truth is that we are working very well, I think we are one of the few tourist spots that Uruguay has almost fully open today. Today we are inaugurating the 20 air conditioners that we are installing in the first 20 rooms. The idea is, in this five-year period, to be able to reach 70% – 80% of the hotel rooms with air facilities ”, Sanguinetti told the press after cutting the ribbon.
The hierarch also took the opportunity to “inaugurate” the new name of the park: it stopped being called ‘UTE-ANTEL Holiday Park’ and is now known as ‘Minas Park’.
A ditch that is flooded
In September, the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, traveled 390 kilometers from Montevideo to Tacuarembó to inaugurate a passage with a ditch that remains under water for more than two months per year.
The Departmental Government of Tacuarembó then shared photographs in their social networks in which Delgado is seen cutting the appointment and unveiling a plaque located next to the work.
“The submersible speed bump was inaugurated in Paso de los Novillos that will connect Route 59 with Route 26 and will allow the passage of production and locals for about 300 days a year,” says the tweet, inferring that the other days it is covered by Water.

15 traffic cones
On the morning of December 3, the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) announced with great fanfare and with everything and its protocol photo the donation of 15 traffic signaling cones to Unit 243 of Volunteer Firefighters of the department of Salto .
This sparked controversy, jokes and even memes on social networks. “The highway budget fell by tens of millions of dollars. But the MTOP proudly publishes the donation of fifteen (QUNCE) signaling cones. From the ridiculous one does not return… ”, tweeted the ex-undersecretary of Economy and current coordinator of the Investment Advisory Commission of the Municipality of Montevideo.
“First UTE inaugurated 6 air conditioners, now the MTOP 15 cones. “Hello third world!” The journalist Federico Castillo joked: “It seems wonderful to me that there are seven people inaugurating 15 cones. It is almost half ”.
The MTOP had to go out and try to explain this controversial donation. According to the newspaper El País, the ministry said that the donation took place within the framework of several agreements signed between the portfolio and various social organizations. In this package of agreements, the MTOP donated $ 4,020,000 to the Guichón National Football Club for repairs and reforms in its headquarters, $ 6,000,000 for the Down Association of Salto, $ 6,000,000 for the Artigas Sports Club, among others .
15 towels for a hospital
The donation of 15 towels for the Florida Hospital is not exactly an official government event, but was made by the Florida Commercial and Industrial Center, but stands out for its similarity to the other “inaugurations”.
“15 white towels were donated by the directive of the Commercial and Industrial Center to the Florida Hospital Support Commission, to contribute with the protocols and biosafety measures for the hygiene of health personnel in the event of COVID-19”, revealed the radio program Give it X Done, from FM High Stone last may.
