Mexico completed the repatriation of the bodies of 56 migrants of different nationalities who lost their lives in the accident last December 9 in Tapachula, Chiapas.
Based on the agreements reached within the framework of the activities of the Immediate Action Group (GAI) against the network of human traffickers responsible for said tragedy, the National Institute of Migration transferred the last remains corresponding to an adult and a minor originally from Guatemala, reported yesterday the Ministry of the Interior.
Sedena transferred remains of 42 people in December
During December 2021 and January 2022, the repatriation of 42 bodies of migrants who came from Guatemala was carried out; 12 from the Dominican Republic; one from El Salvador and one more from Ecuador.
With the support of the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), 38 of the 56 people who died were repatriated in a Mexican Air Force C295 fighter plane to their places of origin (33 to Guatemala and five to the Dominican Republic).
Likewise, it was reported that, of 104 foreign migrants who were injured, to date only one adult woman and one man of Guatemalan origin remain hospitalized, as well as a minor of the same nationality who is in a shelter of the System. for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) in Chiapas, pending his full medical recovery.
In the process and protocols for the repatriation of bodies, the immigration authority has coordinated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Sedena and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), as well as the different consular representations of the countries of origin. of deceased people.
The December 9 tragedy that left 56 fatalities occurred after a trailer clandestinely transporting some 160 irregular migrants crashed into a pedestrian bridge on a highway in Chiapas.
