In the National Commission of Minimum Wages (Conasami) the permanent session of the Council of Representatives was installed yesterday to determine in the coming weeks the increase in the minimum wage that will take effect as of January 1, 2022.

Luis Felipe Munguía Corella, head of the commission, indicated that once the council was installed it declared itself in recess to be in a position to receive studies, opinions and proposals, on which the labor, employer and government sectors will dialogue to seek to unanimously specify a new amount at the minimum wage.

As reported, the representation of workers will demand an increase of 25 percent, while Conasami considers it feasible to increase the minimum wage above 15 percent. Separately, the Citizen Action Against Poverty organization proposed raising it 30 percent.

The current minimum wage is 141.70 pesos a day in most of the country, which implied an increase of 15 percent compared to the one granted in 2020. In the Free Zone of the Northern Border it is 213.39 pesos a day.

Conasami reported that from 2018 to 2021 the minimum wage increased 60.4 percent, going from 88.36 to 141.70 pesos a day in the area Rest of the country; while in the Free Zone of the North Border the increase has been 141.5 percent, to remain at 213.39 pesos per day. Discounting inflation, the increases have been 43 and 115.3 percent, respectively.

During yesterday’s session, chaired by Munguía Corella, the technical direction of the committee presented to the directors the Annual Report on the Behavior of the Economy, with an analysis of the performance of the main economic and labor indicators in Mexico and some countries in the last 12 months.
