The board of directors of the National College of Pharmacists of Panama (Conalfarm) assured this afternoon that, to solve the problem of drug shortages, investment and incentives from the State are imperative.

Jaime Olive, president of Conalfarm stressed that it is necessary to encourage, through fiscal mechanisms and other actions, the national pharmaceutical company and ensure that others establish themselves in Panama with fair prices for the consumer.

“The correct people must be placed to apply the provisions of Law 1 on medicines in such a way that the supply to the population is guaranteed,” said Olive.

He stated that they have been evaluating all the aspects that involve the high cost of medicines, through a subcommittee that seeks alternatives to reduce the high costs.

Another important point for Olive is that high school graduates with good grades can be encouraged to study pharmacy with scholarships. Likewise, to university students in their last year of pharmacy, offer scholarships for master’s and doctoral degrees. In this way the country can achieve the development of professionals in this specialty.

Regarding the Pharmaceutical Hub, the director of Conalfarm indicated that they agree with the measures carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to promote the national industry or attract other investments in this field, taking advantage of the country’s geographical position.
