The technical deputy director general of the National Water Commission (Conagua), Humberto Marengo, warned that in the dry season there will be a very serious problem of water rationing in the Valley of Mexico. I would not even want to imagine the pressure that we are going to have as an institution, and urged transfers from the El Bosque dam, in Michoacán, to the Valle de Bravo dam, in the state of Mexico, which are part of the Cutzamala System.

The official expressed his concern, because the dry season begins (once the cyclone season ended on November 30) with a Cutzamala System with very low storages – it has 14.5 percent less than the average for the date: I ask the deputy directors to please define an urgent action plan to carry out the transfers: leave the water for the crops in El Bosque and move to Valle de Bravo; It is a priority of the actions that Conagua has to do.

In the session of the Technical Committee for the Operation of Hydraulic Works, he assured that Efforts are made to bring a repaired transformer to pass water from El Bosque to Valle de Bravo; As time passes, the water will be used and there will be no opportunity to transfer it, so urgent measures must be taken. The Cutzamala System supplies 33 percent of the water used by the Valley of Mexico.

Marengo asked the head of the Aguas del Valle de México Basin Agency (OCAVM) to speed up the arrival of the reserve transformer: Let’s do what it takes, go to the factory, put pressure on whoever does the repairs. It has to be a joint action of the Conagua, there cannot be such a low level. The answer was that the payment has to be made, so the official asked that it be done yesterday.

The session presented the balance of water storage in the Cutzamala System. Since there was no rain during November, it has storage of 69.3 percent on average.

The Valle de Bravo dam is at 57.7 percent of its capacity (31.3 percent below the historical average, which to date is 89 percent). El Bosque is at 91.5 percent (12.2 percent above its average) and Villa Victoria is below its storage by 8.2 percent, Conagua reported. In the Valley of Mexico there were no rains in this period, so there is already a frank low water, said the director of the OCAVM, Víctor Bourguett.
