Conadis seeks to boost sign language learning in the country

Santo Domingo. – The National Disability Council (CONADIS) held several meetings with leaders of the Sorda community, to boost sign language learning

During these days the advances in the strengthening of the associative movement of the Sorda community were socialized, as well as the works linked to the National Disability Plan 2025-2035, the subindicator 9.06 of the Sismap, the accessibility actions in the public administration and the application of Law 43-23, which officially recognizes the sign language in the Dominican Republic.

In an open dialogue space, representatives of associations and organizations of deaf people shared proposals, concerns and experiences with the Conadis authorities, with the aim of strengthening inter-institutional and community cooperation to guarantee compliance with the rights of this population, in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Law 5-13.

“The dialogue with the leaders of the Sorda community reflects our firm commitment to work together in the construction of inclusive public policies. Sign language is not only communication, it is identity, culture and a human right,” said Alexis Alcántara, executive director of CONADIS.

For his part, the president of the Council, Benny Metz, stressed that the institution will continue to promote interpreter training programs, the production of accessible materials and awareness in public and private institutions to guarantee equal opportunities. “From CONADIS we remain committed to eliminating barriers and promoting inclusive policies that guarantee the full participation of deaf people. In 2023 we present the official Dominican sign language dictionary, also available in digital format at www.Ddictioniolsrd.conadis.gob.do, with the aim of facilitating the learning and use of sign language in our country,” said Metz.

Also, through its awareness division, CONADIS develops workshops aimed at promoting a culture of inclusion and teaching adequate forms of communication with people with disabilities, including sign language.

The institution has also established important collaborations with the Ministry of Education, Banreservas, the Central Electoral Board and other entities, for the promotion and teaching of sign language, as well as for the active participation of interpreters in various official and community activities.
