The Brazilian Program for Modernization Program of the Hortigranjeiro Market (Prohort), released on Thursday (23) by the National Supply Company (Conab), shows that, in December, there was high prices of onion, carrot and tomatoes and low potato.
By monitoring families consumption items, such as what it forms when it forms grain stocks, Conab is fulfilling one of its basic functions, which is to ensure prices that, at the same time, guarantee the profitability of producers and are accessible to the consumers.
According to the newsletter, the potato had been constant price reductions since July 2024. In November, it reacted, showing an increase due to the lowest offer, but in December the prices have fallen again “significantly.”
“The weighted average price among Ceasas fell 27.33% compared to the average of November. The largest offering Paraná in December was the reason for the low prices, ”the company justified.
In the case of onion, the transition from the crop in the market caused the product to rise again after a long fall period. “In December, the new distribution of onion production in the country was configured. From then on, the southern region became the main offering of markets, ”explains Conab.
For the second consecutive month, the carrot had a high price in most Ceasas. This rise is due, according to Conab, the “certain concentration of supply in Minas Gerais, because Bahia and Goiás sent lower quantities to the market”.
Already the tomato recorded slightly above 18% in December, compared to November, in the weighted average. According to Conab, this is due to the “abundant offer” recorded in the second half of last year, which caused price reduction, which, more recently, was reversed.
Fruits
Among the fruits, Conab observed high in the prices of banana, apple and watermelon and fall in orange and papaya.
The banana presented raised quotes for the fall of the offer, while the apple had a high price and commercialization drop. The inventories are practically finalized, and the quotes eventually pushed high, despite stable demand and competition with holiday fruits.
In the case of watermelon, oscillations of quotations and fall in commercialization were observed, “partly because of stagnant demand in some consumer centers due to the presence of rainfall and drop in temperatures.”
The price charged by the orange fell, but is still high. In the case of papaya, there was a drop in commercialization in the Ceasas and elevation of quotations. The result is, according to Conab, a fall in the harvest of the papaya and formosa varieties.
