Grain production, scheduled for the second harvest, is estimated at 272.5 million tons in the 2021-2022 cycle. This is what the 10th Crop Survey, released today (7) by the National Supply Company (Conab) indicates.
According to the entity, this volume, if confirmed, will represent an increase of 6.7% compared to the previous season, which is equivalent to an increase close to 17 million tons. With regard to the total area used for production, the increase will be 4 million hectares, reaching 73.8 million.
“With about 60% of second-crop corn maturing and 28% harvested, the total harvest of the cereal is estimated at 115.6 million tons, 32.8% more than in the last cycle. In the second crop alone, the increase reaches 45.6%, with 88.4 million tons”, informed Conab.
If the numbers are confirmed, this will be the highest production of second-crop corn ever recorded in the entire historical series. “However, it should be noted that, even with an advanced stage of the crop, about 19% of second-crop corn crops are still under the influence of the weather”, adds the company, clarifying that the forecasts are projected taking into account a scenario of “favorable climatic conditions”.
Sorghum, beans and rice
Another grain that tends to break production records is sorghum, also known as zaburro corn, used in the preparation of animal feed, especially chickens. The product has the advantage of greater resistance to drought. According to Conab, the states that registered the highest percentages of growth are Mato Grosso do Sul, Piauí and Bahia, “with increases of 362.6%, 227.2% and 98%, respectively”.
The total production estimated for beans is 3.1 million tons, with emphasis on the cultivation of the second crop which, according to the state-owned company, should register an increase of 26% in comparison with the last cycle. With this, production will increase from 1.1 million tons to 1.4 million.
This recovery is due, according to Conab, to the good weather conditions recorded compared to the 2020/21 crop year.
The drought that occurred in the south of the country and in part of Mato Grosso do Sul damaged rice and soybean crops. As a result, the forecasted production of soybeans is 124 million tons, while the estimated harvest for rice is 10.8 million tons.
Wheat
Wheat gained prominence among winter crops, with the possibility of breaking a new production record, reaching 9 million tons. “With this volume, the growth in the wheat harvest reaches 75% compared to the 2019 harvest, when a production of 5.1 million was recorded”. says Conab.
“This is very important data, since wheat is a crop that the country imports half of what it consumes,” said Conab president Guilherme Ribeiro. According to him, by offering products such as wheat, corn and sorghum, Brazil is “consequently contributing to the fall in inflation”.
Reviews
The 10th survey presents estimates that, in general, were revised upwards, in comparison with those disclosed in the previous report. The exceptions were soybeans and cotton, “due to the expected decrease in production”.
In the case of soybeans, “estimates of seeds/other uses and losses and final stock also decreased by 0.11% and 4.42%, respectively, with the 2022 carryover stock estimated at 4.65 million tons”.
“The supply and ending stock of cotton were reduced by 0.67% and 2%, respectively. As for the international fiber market, the perspective, however, is that exports end the year at 2.05 million tons of lint,” he added.
