Composer of "Assassin's Creed" wins first Grammy for a video game

The composer who scored “Assassin’s Creed” Stephanie Economou won the first Grammy for a video game at the awards ceremony this Sunday in Los Angeles.

The industry had searched for years for a category that would celebrate the soundtrack of video games, a recognition that materializes the impact that the industry and its music have on pop culture.

The nominees opening the slot were the composers behind “Aliens: Fireteam Elite,” “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn Of Ragnarok,” “Call Of Duty: Vanguard,” “Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy,” and “Old World.”

Economu, upon receiving his gramophone, thanked everyone who urged the Recording Academy to finally include this category.at their prestigious annual celebration.

Backstage, an emotional Economou told AFP the win felt “incredible.”

“I had no hope for the category because I am relatively new in the video game score scene and competed against titans and veterans”.

She noted that she was the only woman nominated for the award.

“I hope this sets a precedent and that I won’t be the only woman in the category from now on.”

So far, at the Grammys video games fell into the Soundtrack for Visual Media category, which also includes music for film and television.

However, for many people in the sector it was like mixing apples and pears, so demanded an independent category for video games, which have finally achieved.

The global video game industry moved close to 200,000 million dollars in 2022, according to a projection from the Global Games Market Report. And a recent Deloitte survey conducted in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil and Japan indicated that video games are the main source of entertainment for Generation Z.

For many of these young players, music is an integral part of the experience: a third of those surveyed say that after listening to it, they look for it on the internet, and another 29% say that they often discover new music while playing.

“Players really listen (…) it’s an important part of their gaming experience,” says Stephanie Economou, Grammy nominee and Los Angeles-based songwriter who has also created music for films and television shows.

“Many can’t separate the music from the game and that is a great opportunity for any composer,” the “Assassin’s Creed” composer told AFP.

the new category “It’s an important step for people to recognize that video games have been part of the zeitgeist for a long time,” he says.
