The National Superintendence of Migration announced in March that ordinary electronic passports valid for 10 years would experience an increase in their cost. This measure has generated controversy, and Congresswoman Adriana Tudela Gutiérrez was quick to react.

Through his official account on X (previously known as Twitter), Tudela denounced that Migrations has decided to increase the cost of issuing passports by 21%, claiming that this measure has been taken “without complying with the methodology required to determine the cost of the procedure”.
Currently, the ordinary passport is valid for five years and costs S/98.60. With the new provision, by doubling its validity to 10 years, the price has increased by S/22.30, which raises the total cost to S/120.90. The National Superintendence of Migration has defended the measure arguing that, despite the increase, citizens would benefit in the long term, since they would not have to pay again for a new passport at the end of the five years, which would represent a saving in time.
However, the legislator believes that this increase is not justified and has filed a complaint with the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) to investigate the reasons behind this increase. Tudela has demanded transparency in the process and that the procedures used to establish the new rate be reviewed.
Migration has decided to charge citizens 21% more for issuing passports, since they are now valid for 10 years. This does not comply with the methodology required to determine the cost of the procedure.

The complaint has sparked debate in the political and social spheres, with various sectors calling for a thorough review of the case. Indecopi must now evaluate whether the Immigration Superintendency has followed the appropriate procedures and whether the increase in fees is justified.
