The conflict in the dairy industry between workers and companies has intensified and employers expect that next week there will be supply problemsand with that there may be changes in some prices, informed sources from the Chamber of the Dairy Industry of Uruguay (CILU) to The Observer.
“There will be supply problems and the market will say if there is a consequence in price increases. We have tried to do everything possible to take care of prices to collaborate with the inflation situation that we have, but these situations affect the entire price chain. There may be a price escalation as a result of product shortages”, maintained a member of the CILU. Those of the FTIL “are measures that only do harm and that do not contribute to the negotiation,” he added.
The Federation of Workers of the Dairy Industry (FTIL) toughened its union measures in claim for Wage Councils and a peace clause that they discuss with the businessmen. On the one hand, the employers ask that it be sanctioned when there is a breach of the conflict prevention clause and on the other, that if the agreement is agreed – which will mark how the salary adjustments will be – there will be no claims for salaries while it is in force, they explained. from CILU. For employers, it is not good practice for workers to take – and even deepen – measures when “the Salary Council instance is open”, indicated a source from the FTIL.

Among the measures that the FTIL will take are strikes of two hours per shift, strikes of one day per worker and affectation of exports. The latter, especially, worries businessmen, since they fear not being able to fulfill already agreed businesses. The CILU stated that this measure is not only bad for business, but also “affects the image of the country.”
According to what they assured from the companies, the objective of “reaching an agreement to work in peace”. Now, both employers and workers are waiting for a call from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) to continue talking.
Weeks ago there was already a shortage of some by-products and products, including fresh milk, and for two weeks the workers of the industry have been implementing work according to regulations in several plants, so some products are also not in such supply on the shelves. , but it is expected that, if the announced measures are finally carried out, the shortage will deepen.
