Community members from Espinar block the road to Las Bambas and demand 20 tractors to the mine (PHOTOS)

The inhabitants of the so-called 21 original communities of Coporaque in the province of Espinar (Cusco), resumed the blockade of the Southern Mining Corridor, demanding 20 agricultural tractors that they ask the mining company MMG Las Bambas, as part of a social compensation – environmental, for the damage they claim their trucks cause when passing through the place.

On the morning of last Monday, fifty community members stationed themselves in the vicinity of the Apurímac Bridge, where they blocked the passage with stones, tires and other objects, mentioning at first that it was a 24-hour strike, the same one who opted for an indefinite strike some time later.

in conversation with Mailthe president of the Coporaque Single Defense Front, Raúl Hancco, indicated that they will not abandon their protest measure because they have already exhausted all the documentary and legal channels to obtain the 20 agricultural tractorswhich the mining company would have agreed to deliver and has not done so until now.

“We have already had several meetings and dialogue tables with MMG Las Bambas on the issue of the 20 tractors as a contribution for environmental social responsibility, they have delivered nine but 20 more are missing, another agreement was to deliver three million soles for two years, However, now they do not know that act, so now they will not pass through here “sentenced the leader.

Meanwhile, from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, a call was made to resume dialogue in the area. Through an official letter addressed to the mayor of Espinar, leaders of Coporaque and representatives of MMG Las Bambas, they are ordered to attend a dialogue table this March 30, date until which the blockade will continue in the area.

“They are calling us to continue this dialogue table this 30 and until that day the blockade against Las Bambas will be carried out, Hudbay trucks will pass, because despite being a small company, it is making an annual contribution,” Raúl Hancco limited.

The protesters assure the success of their blockade because have been organized in groups by communities, four per day, whose inhabitants will be in charge of obstructing the passage to all vehicles of Las Bambas and leaving free passage to others.
