Communiqué from Nación Media regarding events and threats of censorship

Communiqué from Nación Media regarding events and threats of censorship

After the candidate for president of the Republic Efraín Alegre has censored the coverage of the media that make up Nación Media in the activities of the Concertación on April 30, the holding decided to demonstrate through a statement for this direct attack against the freedom of the exercise of the press protected by the National Constitution. The document will be presented to international observers, the Ministry of the Interior and other organizations.

Free expression and freedom of the press are guaranteed, as well as the dissemination of thought and opinion, without any censorship.”, expresses article 26 of our Magna Carta. In that order, Nación Media considers that the aggravating factor in this case is that said intimidation attempts come from candidates for public office, from an aspiring senator (Bruno Defelippe) to a presidential candidate.

We claim freedom of the press and expression not only of our journalistic media, but of all the media in ParaguayTherefore, we believe that silently admitting a censorship is admitting all censorships”, states part of the document.

It also emphasizes that political struggles in Paraguay have polarized and confronted the media, but that normalizing liberticide in the hands of political leaders will end up threatening all journaliststo all the media and to all citizens.

Likewise, it is reiterated that Nación Media’s commitment is to the people, the readers, the audience; “we will always be in the place where it is necessary to generate information, beyond the threats, with the transparency of our position”, they highlight in the letter.

Regarding the particular fact that is related to the slander and expressions of hate by Efraín Alegre towards the journalists of Nación Media, the statement makes it clear: “We require timely attention to security in the face of the possible actions of fanatics, who, motivated by such incitements, attempt against the integrity of our journalists”.

In that order, The competent authorities are required to guarantee the work of the entire journalistic team of Nación Media and of all the national and international mediaespecially the day of the general elections on April 30.
