Communications operators agree to improve the Internet “without using the World Wide Web”

“The agreement seeks not only to improve the provision of internet service for Venezuelans, but also to facilitate connectivity, interoperability and procedures necessary to meet the needs of the various operators,” explained the Ministry of Technology.

A dozen communications operators agreed to work together on a project that seeks to “improve the quality of Internet traffic in the country without having to use the global network,” the Ministry of Science and Technology announced on Saturday, September 21.

Through a Press releaseThe Government explained that the agreement was signed within the framework of the II International Telecommunications Fair of Venezuela (Fitelven), which is being held in Caracas, and was attended by the National Telephone Company of Venezuela (Cantv) and companies such as Inter, NetUno, Digitel, Movilnet, PatriaCell, Thundernet, Inter, VNET, and Fibex.

“IXP (Internet Protocol Exchange) technology will enable point-to-point connectivity between national operators, eliminating dependence on international connections and ensuring that internet traffic remains within the country,” the statement said.

According to the authorities, this is “an effort to guarantee technological sovereignty and strengthen national telecommunications” as well as to “improve the security of communications.”

The director general of the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), Jorge Márquez, considered that this project “will mark a before and after” in the country, and invited all operators to join this agreement to “further strengthen telecommunications”

One of the goals of this association is to improve fiber optic speeds, a service deployed in “99% of municipalities” and which has extended internet penetration, which already reaches 65% of the population, according to official data.

“The agreement seeks not only to improve the provision of Internet service for Venezuelans, but also to facilitate connectivity, interoperability and procedures necessary to meet the needs of the various operators,” the Executive added.
