The Committee denounced that the releases are applied in a discretionary manner and for propaganda purposes and not as genuine acts of justice since full freedom is not granted.
The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) stated that the number of releases of political prisoners announced by the Ministry for the Penitentiary Service does not even reach 10% of the cases that they have documented together with other human rights organizations.
Through a message published on his social networks, he noted that so far it has only been possible to corroborate 63 names of the 71 reported with relatives. “Even if the figure announced by the State were accepted as true, the number of political prisoners in Venezuela would still be around a thousand people,” he questioned.
The organization specified that there have been no releases of “human rights defenders, journalists, foreigners or recognized political or social leaders, which confirms a pattern of selective repression against those who represent a real risk to the preservation of power.”
The Committee condemned that while the releases are announced, there are still “seriously ill” political prisoners whose lives are in danger.
He denounced that the releases are applied discretionally and for propaganda purposes and not as genuine acts of justice since full freedom is not granted.
Releases are not a favor
The Committee celebrated “with hope, memory and renewed commitment” the release of political prisoners, but assured that it is not a favor from those who will exercise power, but rather an achievement of family members with the support of national and international organizations.
«The releases announced this Thursday, December 25, are not a concession or an act of benevolence from power, as the statement from the Penitentiary Service attempts to present. They are the result of sustained pressure and the persevering struggle of mothers, fathers, children, siblings, activists, human rights defenders and entire communities, inside and outside Venezuela, who have refused to normalize injustice. They have also been possible thanks to the supportive support of international organizations, such as the United Nations, and the international community that has echoed our complaints,” he said in the statement published on his X account.
COMMUNICATION | A victory of truth, not a favor of power
We embrace the families who have their loved ones back home today. It has been a very unfair pain.
