Committee for the freedom of political prisoners reports 60 releases in two days

The Public Ministry said on the afternoon of December 20 that they had agreed with the courts to release 200 political prisoners for a total of 733.

The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners reported this Saturday December 21 the release of some 60 people between the aforementioned day and Friday the 20th, according to what was collected from relatives of those detained for crimes of conscience after the 2024 presidential elections.

According to the report of said committee, on Friday 37 releases were reported from the Tocorón prison, Aragua state; 13 in Tocuyito, Carabobo; and six in the Las Crisálidas penitentiary center, in Los Teques. In fact, this Saturday another four were reported from that last prison.

They warn that the exit from the prisons is being carried out without the relatives, who are on the outskirts, being able to realize what is happening. He reports that they are put in ambulances or official cars to take political prisoners out at night and leave them in terminals with the clothes they are wearing. There, they must manage to call their loved ones to help them return home.

Likewise, they warn that the releases are carried out under the conditions of not saying anything about it, without recording or giving statements to the press about what they experienced in prison; so NGOs have the most difficult job to be able to count and document the process in order to keep track of how many people are left inside.

Also, the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners indicated that there are “serious doubts” about the number of people who are left outside the prisons because “this is not the first time” that people have lied about it; Just as he denounced that there continues to be opacity on the part of the State by not providing information about the process.

The latest releases have been carried out in parallel with new arrests, such as those of four members of the Vente Venezuela party, led by MarĂa Corina Machado; that of former Caracas councilor JesĂşs Armas; that of the mayor of Cabimas, Zulia state (northwest), Nabil Maalouf; that of the activist Luis Palocz, and that of the leader Carlos Azuaje.

In addition, NGOs, relatives and activists denounced the three deaths in prison – one in November and two this month – of detainees in the post-electoral context, cases that the largest opposition coalition – the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – asks to be documented by the Court. International Criminal Court (ICC), which investigates the alleged commission of crimes against humanity in the country.

The Public Ministry (MP) reported on the afternoon of Friday December 20that between the 19th and the 20th of this month, 200 reviews of measures for defendants in the post-electoral context were agreed upon by the Judiciary.

“With these new approved requests, the number of 733 releases carried out within the framework of due process guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic is reached,” the MP published in a statement posted on the social network Instagram.
