The Committee of Mothers in Defense of the Truth reported that many post-election prisoners held in the Tocorón prison “present profound symptoms of depression and some of them are self-harming.” It was reiterated that these people “did not commit any crime” and “their cases are paralyzed, as well as the measure reviews.”
The Committee of Mothers in Defense of Truth denounced this Friday a series of punishments to post-election prisoners held in the Tocorón prison, Aragua state, after the suicide attempt of a young man last Monday the 17th.
In a statementthe Committee reported that Juan David Gutiérrez Medina, detained last year in the context of protests after the presidential elections, tried to commit suicide inside the Aragua Penitentiary Center (Tocorón). The young man was helped by his companions, who notified the guards.
“Two of them were punished and sent to a cell known as “el tigrito” as a result of having questioned the guards about the situation presented, in which apparently they are removing the electric light in the hallways and unjustifiably delaying meal times,” denounced the organization, which brings together mothers and relatives of post-election prisoners.

Likewise, the group of mothers pointed out that Gutiérrez Medina’s case “is added to three other confirmed attempts that have occurred this year, as well as the unfortunate suicide of Lindomar Bustamante last May.”
They stated that these are not “isolated events” but are part of the “terrible effects that this unjust prison is having on our relatives.”
«Many have profound symptoms of depression and some of them are self-harming. In the month of November, 16 months have passed since the majority of them were deprived of their liberty without committing any crime or without a court order against them. Their cases are paralyzed, as well as the measure reviews,” stated the Mothers’ Committee.
The organization reiterated its request to the authorities to resume the review of files and grant precautionary measures. They also demanded that these cruel, inhuman and degrading punishments and treatment against post-election prisoners be investigated and that they be guaranteed “decent conditions” of confinement.
«As we continue to fight for the freedom of our loved ones, they deserve to be in the best possible conditions. Our boys are good people. Workers, professionals in different branches, artists, athletes, students, who are the present and the future of our country. “Why insist that they continue to lose their lives under unjust imprisonment?” they highlighted.
