Commission resolves 72 challenges from Ombudsman candidates; 61 cases still to be reviewed

Without specifying qualifications or disqualifications, the Mixed Constitutional Commission reported that Until 11:00 p.m., 72 challenges out of 133 were resolved that must be considered until Saturday by the deadlines handled by this legislative body.

In the four days, individuals and opposition legislators filed 133 challenges in total, which means that legislators have already resolved 54.1% of the cases and is expected to conclude this Friday.

Unofficially it was known that two qualified candidates were removed from the competition, although they must be systematized before making the names official. These two eliminations would be added to that of Nadia Cruz, Interim Ombudsman, and therefore, the preliminary list would remain at 69 qualified candidates.

The president of this commission, Rubén Gutiérrez, reported that on Sunday the final list of qualified will be published. On Monday, the parliamentarians will begin the qualification of the merits of these applicants and the interviews that each one must have will be scheduled.

The commission will resume its work this Friday. and plans to end the review of all petitions. There are challenges from candidates who want to be rehabilitated to continue in competition and from individuals and politicians who challenged those who are already classified in the first phase.

One of the most striking cases it was that of the Santa Cruz candidate, Jorge Paz Yabeta, who traveled to La Paz to challenge his disqualification since he was disqualified for not meeting requirement 12, which refers to certification in the defense of human rights. Paz Yabeta is widely known in his region as a human rights defender and was even a representative of the Ombudsman in Santa Cruz.

The lawyer and activist from Santa Cruz requested that his case be reconsidered, however, the president of the commission specified that candidates could not rectify documents that they did not present and it remains to know the decision of the senators.

Deputy Gabriela Ferrel reported that the challenges are not easy to resolve because those who presented the documents accompanied their requests with voluminous documents which are the “suitable test” required by the regulation.
