Lieutenant General Marcos de Sá Fonso Da Costa, Commander of the Monusco Force, recognized the “remarkable work” of the Uruguayan Balallón (URUBATT) in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Monusco). This was transmitted by the Brazilian military in a letter addressed to Army General Gerardo Fregossi, Commander in Chief of the Uruguayan Army. In the letter, dated in the city of Goma, on August 24, the Commander of Monusco states: «I am very honored to write to you again regarding the remarkable work of the Uruguayan Battalion (URUBATT) in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The URUBATT is always committed to carrying out the tasks for the fulfillment of the mandate in this mission.
In this sense, the URUBATT carried out operations between July 25 and 29, 2022 to protect MONUSCO personnel and UN bases in the Goma area – North Kivu province, during the violent demonstrations and attacks against MONUSCO.
I want to highlight the courage of the Unit, the firmness of the actions undertaken and the extraordinary tactical skills demonstrated by URUBATT under the firm leadership of its Commander, Colonel Gerardo Datelle.
The conduct of the troops is commendable and speaks of the professionalism, operational readiness and commitment of the Uruguayan Army.
I take this opportunity to assure you of my highest personal consideration of respect and esteem.
Lieutenant General MARCOS DE SÁ FONSO DA COSTA MONUSCO Force Commander.
