Poverty was 9.9% in 2022, a reduction compared to the record of 10.6% of the previous year

People below the poverty line were 9.9% during the year 2022, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported on Monday in its estimate made by the income method, which implied a drop from 10.6 % registered in the 2021 measurement.

On the other hand, the people below the indigence line the previous year were 0.3%, the same level as in 2021.

The incidence of poverty presents a heterogeneous distribution in the national territory. “The highest values are registered in the departments of Cerro Largo, Rivera, Montevideo and Treinta y Tres. On the other hand, the lowest levels correspond to the departments of Flores, San José and Colonia”, indicated the official report.

However, as in measurements from previous years, age was once again a relevant variable for the analysis of poverty, and it affected children and adolescents to a greater extent.

Among those under six years of age, 19.7% are below the poverty line, between 6 to 12 years of age it is 18%, and between 13 to 17 years of age 16.2%. Meanwhile, among people between 18 and 64, 8.7% are below the poverty line. And in those over 65%, 2% are poor.

The INE also presented this Monday the data on people below the poverty line in the second semester of 2022, which stood at 9.1%. In the second semester of 2021, people below the poverty line were 11%.

Economist Nicolás Cichevski, manager of Economic Analysis at CPA Ferrere, indicated that poverty during the second semester was at levels similar to those of 2019, before the pandemic.

“It is likely that part of the reduction is explained by the recovery of real household income. During the 2nd semester, and in particular in the last quarter, the real income of the households recovered on average and, more importantly, on the median”, he explained. (Montevideo Portal)
