HAVANA, Cuba.- From the Combinado del Este prison of maximum rigor, which is located at kilometer 13 ½ of the Monumental road, in the Guanabacoa municipality of the capital of the island, the 11J protester Amaury Leyva Prieto denounces that the authorities of that penitentiary center have repeatedly denied him to visit his mother, who is seriously ill.
Amaury Leyva, a protester from La Güinera, is a prisoner on the 4th floor of building 1 of the Havana prison. He reveals that his mother is terminally ill with cancer and his health is rapidly deteriorating.
For this reason, for several weeks she has repeatedly requested the necessary safe-conduct from the prison authorities, with the aim of being able to go see her while she is still alive, but time has passed and the military do not issue the authorization or give her response.
Leyva Prieto explained to CubaNet that on Thursday, August 4, he again asked the head of building 1, an officer known as Major Hardy, to provide him with the driver, but he did not receive a response either.
The political prisoner adds that due to the indolence of the officer and the prison authorities on Saturday the 6th, in protest, he began to shout slogans against the government, such as “down with the dictatorship”, “homeland and life”, etc.
The young man added in a telephone conversation that in retaliation the soldiers took him away in handcuffs and sentenced him to 10 days in a punishment cell. In addition, the head of the building warned him that “now they are not going to take him to see his mother because he doesn’t feel like it.”
The protester also denounces that his sentence, which had been initially set at 14 years in prison, was increased to 17 years after the appeal.
