Combating Hunger Needs Sensitivity and State Policy, says Lula

In celebrating on Tuesday (5) Brazil’s departure from the map of hunger, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva highlighted the need for compromise of government and integrated public policies to combat hunger. According to him, it is necessary to involve society in this process. Combating Hunger Needs Sensitivity and State Policy, says Lula

“You can’t have a ‘break-gill’ policy to solve the problem of hunger. We are proving that this is not resolved if there is no state public policy,” Lula said at the end of the plenary meeting of the National Council for Food and Nutrition Security (Consea).

THE EXIT OF BRAZIL FROM THE HUNGHT MAPA It was announced last week by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO/UN). The global indicator identifies countries in which more than 2.5% of the population suffer from severe subalimentation (chronic food insecurity). Brazil had reached this level in 2014, but returned to the map of hunger in the 2018/2020 triennium. Now, in the 2022/2024 triennium, it has been below 2.5%.

Lula criticized the lack of sensitivity of the world’s rulers with the subject and highlighted the importance of Consea and civil society for the result

“It’s very easy to make speeches, but take care of the poor poor, you don’t take care of your head awareness, it’s with your heart. You have to have felt it, or have lived or know someone who has lived it. Hunger doesn’t hurt, it will corrode you inside. And the most serious is that people are ashamed to say hungry.”

The president was thrilled and cried to say that he often had no lunch at the job, as he could not afford to take a lunchbox or buy a snack.

“The companions kept asking if I wasn’t going to eat, and said I wasn’t hungry. And every time they put a mortadella sandwich in my mouth, I imagined it was me who was biting that sandwich. And I was ashamed to say hungry and came back to work.

What is the consea

Consea is the advisory body of the Presidency of the Republic that operates in the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of public and nutritional security policies. The board was disabled in 2019 and reinstalled by President Lula in 2023.

During the event, Consea President Elisabetta Recine highlighted how quickly Brazil managed to get off the hunger map.

“We get out of the hunger map in two years, and this shows that as much as we have reached a dramatic situation in our country, we do not forget the lesson. We did not forget how to do integrated, focused public policies, directed to the main problems this country has,” he said.

According to her, currently the country has 7 million people in a serious food insecurity. “It is in these people that our programs need to arrive, in an integrated way,” he concluded.
