Combating deforestation must be Brazil’s priority for mitigating climate change. The assessment was made by the National Secretary for Climate Change at the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, Ana Toni.
“In terms of mitigation, the [combate ao] deforestation is number one, two, and three”, said the secretary.
She also cites the electrification of buses and small urban trucks as measures to reduce carbon emissions.
“In the area of energy and transport, obviously we have the electrification of buses, the electrification of small trucks that travel in the city. Not only because it is good for carbon removal, but also because of the health issue”.
Report
Ana Toni’s statements were given today (20) in live on social networks, after the release of the United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report.
O document pointed out that the pace and scale of measures taken so far by countries, as well as current plans, are insufficient to deal with climate change.
The report warns that more ambitious measures are needed and shows that, “if we act now, it is still possible to guarantee a sustainable and livable future for all”.
The IPCC was created by the United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988. The purpose is to provide regular scientific assessments on climate change, its implications and possible future risks, in addition to to propose adaptation and mitigation options. The panel has 195 member countries, including Brazil.
“We must look at mitigation issues not only in combating climate change, but also that they are beneficial either for health or to bring more jobs. Reforestation is a case that also brings jobs”, said Ana.
