The mayor of Colonia, Carlos Moreira, assured this weekend that his government “did not have time” to organize the lifeguard service, so tourists must ensure their own safety when they spend the summer in the more than 180 kilometers of beaches that the department has.
Instead, there will only be posters warning of the risk of drowning, and others.
“It will not have because we did not have much time to organize it. We made an agreement with the Prefecture putting up posters, preventing. We never had lifeguard service in the department of Colonia and in reality personal misfortunes have been very few because we have a very shallow coast, we don’t have big currents, it’s not the same as the ocean, that’s something else, there if the beaches are more dangerous”, said the nationalist mayor.
“In this case, with the prudence that our people have, we are going to have officials also controlling and the Prefecture, it seems to me that things are going to run like every year,” added Moreira.
