Colombians who travel outside the country spend twice as much as those who come

According to the International Visitors Survey (EVI), from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane), in the period from April to June they left and arrived in the country. 1.31 million people, of this total, 711,511 (54%) entered the countryof which 677,864 did so for tourism and 33,647 for hiking. Those who arrived in the country by plane spent an average of US$1,354 on their trip (US$94.8 per day), while They left and spent US$2,559 (US$122.3 a day), that is, close to double. It is worth clarifying that those who arrived in the country traveled on average 14.8 days, while tourists outside the country stayed on average 20.9 days.

Likewise, in this period of time, the Dane showed that 46.5% of the trips by inbound and outbound tourism visitors were made mainly for vacation, recreation or leisure reasons. In second place, with 28.1%, are trips intended to visit family or friends and 17.3% correspond to trips made for business and professional reasons remunerated at origin.

Travelers who arrived in the country

The main reason for travel by visitors who entered Colombia was related to vacations, recreation and leisure, with a participation of 47.9% (336,547 trips), followed by visiting family or friends with 31.6% (221,593 trips). ), business or professional reasons remunerated at origin with 10.8% (76,126 trips), transit with 3.4% (23,633 trips), attendance at congresses, seminars and/or conventions with 2.2% (15,753 trips ), medical treatments and/or wellness experiences with 1.8% (12,445 trips), education and training with 0.8% (5,866 trips), sports tourism with 0.5% (3,356 trips), religion and pilgrimages with 0.3% (2,005 trips) and other reasons with 0.7% (4,609 trips).

As mentioned, the average expense was US$1,354.8 for trips by non-residents who ended a trip in Colombia. The main average expense recorded by reason was medical treatments and/or wellness experiences with US$3,541.8followed by education and training with US$2,159.5 and vacations, recreation or leisure with US$1,608.1. In relation to the average daily expenses made on trips by visitors between the months of April to June 2024, a total average expense of US$94.8 was recorded where The highest average expense was recorded for sports tourism with US$158.7 and medical treatments and/or wellness experiences with US$153.6. Likewise, the travel reasons with the lowest daily expenditure were visiting family or friends with US$50.8, religion and pilgrimages with US$49, and education and training with US$41.9.

Of the total expenditure, it is mainly explained by food and beverages by 28.8% (US$389.8, accommodation with a participation of 18.7% (US$252.8), tourist package in 15.7% (US$212.3), land and water transportation 9.5% (US$128.8), purchase of crafts, souvenirs and/or gifts by 8.1% (US$110.2) and cultural and recreational services by 6.5% (US$87.7).

The main travel destinations are Antioquia with 11.9 nights and 197,767 trips, Bogotá with 11.7 nights and 196,770 trips and Bolívar with 7.3 nights and 103,819 trips. In relation to the destinations with the lowest number of trips, there are Vaupés with 17.5 nights and 159 trips, Guainía with 14 nights and 55 trips, and finally, Vichada with 31.0 nights and 34 trips.

The highest average daily expenses are in San Andrés and Providencia with US$276.7, Bolívar with US$189.6, Chocó with US$145.4, and Antioquia with US$108.3. In contrast, the destinations that recorded the lowest spending were Vichada with US$36.6, Cauca US$29.4 and Caquetá with US$26.5.

Colombians who left the country

The main reasons for trips by residents who went abroad were related to vacations, recreation and leisure with a participation of 44.8% (271,553 trips), followed by business or professional reasons remunerated at origin in 24.7% (149,652 trips). ), visit to family or friends 24% (145,583 trips), education and training 2.8% (16,792 trips), attendance at conferences, seminars and/or conventions 2.6% (15,701 trips), sports tourism 0.4% (2,342 trips), religion and pilgrimages 0.3% (1,720 trips), medical treatments and/or wellness experiences 0.1% (828 trips) and others 0.3% (2,027 trips).

Of the total, travelers spent mainly on air transportation with a share of 27.6% (US$705.9), food and beverages with a share of 18.8% (USD $481.3), accommodation with 16% (US$410.5), tourist package with 13.6% (US$347.1), land and water transportation with 5.8% (US$148.6), purchase of crafts, souvenirs and/or gifts with 5.7% (US$146.7), cultural and recreational services with 4.3% (US$111, 0), goods for personal use with 3.5% (US$89.4), education and training with 3.1% (US$78.3), cruises with 0.2% (US$5.3) and others 1, 4% (US$35.4).

The main travel destinations are North America with 240,688 trips and 22.5 average overnight stays, South America with 165,972 trips and 17.5 nights and Central America and the Caribbean with 89,219 trips and 13.6 nights. In relation to the destination with the least frequency of trips, it was Oceania with 2,423 and 136.1 nights.

It is also worth noting that the highest average daily expenses were recorded in Others with US$196.3, Europe with US$157.9 and Central America and the Caribbean with US$127.4. In contrast, the destination that recorded the lowest spending was Oceania with US$81.1.
