A total of 908,565 Colombians registered abroad will be able to participate in these elections for which the consulates in 66 countries will have open 250 tables of voting from Monday 7 to 13 March.

As New Zealand is 17 hours ahead of Colombia, the consulate in Auckland was the first to open the voting.

The first person to cast their vote in the ballot box was the citizen Imelda Aguirre, The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Echeverri, detailed in a statement, who virtually accompanied the installation of the day from the Foreign Ministry in Bogotá.

Colombians will go to the polls next Sunday, March 13, to elect the 108 members of the Senate, the 188 of the House of Representatives and those of the 16 peace seats, reserved for the victims of the armed conflict.

That same day will be held consultations of the three coalitions to elect candidates for the presidential elections whose first round will be on May 29.

The majority of Colombians registered abroad are in United States and to guarantee that everything works well, the diplomatic and consular offices in that country were reinforced with more officials.

At the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry, the monitoring table for the electoral process abroad was installed, which will operate 24 hours a day throughout the week.

When referring to the Colombians who are in Venezuela, Echeverri said that Colombia does not have diplomatic or consular representation in that country, due to the unilateral rupture of relations by the president Nicholas Maduro.

As a result of this, the National Registry, which organizes the elections, installed six polling stations in border areas, so that Colombians can vote.

Maduro broke off relations with Colombia on February 23, 2019, following the failed attempt by opposition leader Juan Guaidó to enter from the Colombian city of Cúcuta with a caravan of humanitarian aid.
