According to figures from runt and calculations of let’s go, As of 2021, the average age of 6.6 million motor vehicles of four wheels onwards registered in Colombia reached the 17.5 years exceeding the 17.2 years registered in 2020.

It should be noted that the light vehicles (cars, taxis, campers and vans) recorded a mean age of 17.1 years, while the passenger segments (buses, vans, microbuses) have an average of 20.8 years and cargo vehicles (truck, tractor-trailer and dump truck) show an average age of 21.6 years.
The older market segments are dump trucks, with 25 years on average; followed by the campers, with 22.8 years; buses, with 22.5 years; trucks, with 22.1 years; Y buses, with 22 years.

The motorcycles, On the other hand, they register an average age of 11.1 years, the lowest of the total vehicle fleet given the short useful life of these vehicles that circulate in Colombia.
By 2021, the average age of fleet in the United States reached 12.2 years, while in the countries of the European Union it was 10.7 years.
For Oliverio Enrique García, president of Andemos, “behind these indicators there is a very large economic burden for the country associated with public health derived from the degradation of air quality, road accidents due to vehicular obsolescence and impacts on the country’s productivity generated by lost profits due to maintenance and inefficiencies in the trips made. A more efficient and sustainable vehicle fleet, reduce travel times, fleet operating costs and fuel consumption, and costs associated with public health, all these reductions contribute to improving the country’s competitiveness”.

The vehicle fleet over 10 years old also registers an increase in its participation in the total park: it went from 56.3%, in 2018, to 62%, in 2021.
According to a study by the National Institute of Health (INS), In Colombia, 15,681 people die annually from diseases associated with poor air quality. Likewise, the National Planning Department estimated that the cost of illnesses and deaths due to poor air quality costs the country about 12.2 billion pesos, a figure that is equivalent to 1.5% of GDP.
It is important to mention that part of this contamination is attributed to the particulate material expelled by the obsolete vehicles, hence the need to create incentives to promote the registration of new cleaner and safer vehicles with the implementation of public policies with benefits or distinctive environmental criteria.

According to figures from the study of the impact of the automotive sector on the Colombian economy carried out by Andemos in 2021, while the average number of vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants of the world is 435.6, the country registers 126.5, one of the lowest rates of the OECD countries, which is explained by the long life of old vehicles in the country and therefore the low rotation of the vehicle fleet.
“The automotive sector in Colombia contributes 160 billion pesos annually in chained added values, so this sector is decisive for the economic and social stability of the country, so having a more modern automotive fleet drives economic development. In fact, many countries encourage vehicle renewal because they see an opportunity to boost economies in terms of productivity, collection and employment.Garcia added.
