In the resolution approved by the Colombian Senate, the government of Gustavo Petro is urged to publicly recognize the “true winner” of the Venezuelan presidential elections. They said that this is a sign of support for democracy in the region.
He Senate of Colombia On Tuesday 24th, the National Assembly approved a resolution recognizing Edmundo González Urrutia as the “undisputed winner” of the last presidential elections, and urged the government of Gustavo Petro to publicly recognize his position as president-elect.
“It is public knowledge that the elections in Venezuela have been the subject of complaints of fraud, intimidation and repression of the opposition. In light of this, it is imperative that the Government of Colombia adopt a clear and firm position in favor of democracy, aligning itself with the countries that have already rejected the fraudulent results,” says part of the resolution, approved with 48 votes in favor and six against.
With this, they join a similar proposal approved by the House of Representatives on September 16, where recognition was also requested for González Urrutia, who is in Spain after being the victim of “coercion” as he reported a few days ago.
Gustavo Petro is in New York, where he participated in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Although he did not refer directly to the Venezuelan issue in his speech, he did report that he will hold meetings with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss this point.
“Let’s wait for a joint statement. There are factors that have to be decided at this time, the very governance of the United States is subject to popular decision. We have to wait to see who will be the next president of the United States and with that new government build a political solution to Venezuela’s problems,” Petro added.
The Senate’s proposal also highlighted that this recognition of “legitimate results is not only a sign of support for democracy in the region, but also an action consistent with the principles of Colombia’s foreign policy, committed to the defense of human rights and the rule of law.”
Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, of the Democratic Center, said that it was “just and necessary for the Colombian Congress to support the Venezuelan people in the fight to achieve freedom (…) It is evident that the elected president of Venezuela is being persecuted today by the dictatorial regime of Maduro, he had to leave the country due to an arbitrary, violent persecution, where he was even pressured to sign in an extortionate manner, recognizing the electoral fraud.”
He reiterated that the opposition and the Venezuelans who voted for González Urrutia “deserve our support. They have been brave and we will have to be brave to support them and also to face the same dangers that Colombian democracy faces.”
