The former Colombian president Álvaro Uribe was sentenced to a penalty of 12 years in house arrest for bribery and procedural fraud, in a historic decision that makes him the first former president convicted and deprived of liberty in the country.
The former rightist gap of 73 years will also be disabled to exercise public office for more than eight years, according to a document of the verdict filtered by the press, and whose authenticity confirmed to the AFP a source close to the counterpart under condition of anonymity.

The decision is the tip of the iceberg of other investigations that relate the exmandatary to those ultra -right squads, responsible for numerous heinous crimes against civilians during the armed conflict.
Hours before knowing his grief, the leader of the Colombian right assured on the X network that takes refuge in his loved ones and “fundamentally prayer.”
Uribe’s defense announced that he will appeal the decision in a ruling that they consider politicized and under pressure on the left in power.

Demand against Petro
On opposite political shores, Uribe and President Gustavo Petro often collide on this case.
The lawyers of the former governor filed a complaint against Petro for “harassment and slander” before a commission of the lower house with powers to investigate the leaders, as indicated this Friday in a statement.
The jurists say that during the week he gave unfounded accusations against Uribe, attributing crimes as drug trafficking.
When defense lawyers appeal, the case will go to the Superior Court of Bogotá, which has until October 16 to ratify the conviction or revoke it and acquit it. If it exceeds that date, the process will be filed.

It all started in 2012, when Uribe sued the left senator Iván Cepeda before the Supreme Court of Justice for ensuring that imprisoned paramilitaries said they had links with the ex -president.
In 2018 the Court took a turn and began investigating the former president for manipulating witnesses to harm Cepeda.
Two years later Uribe, who was then a senator, resigned from Congress in a maneuver that made him lose his fueros, so the case went to ordinary justice.
In 2024 the trial began and finally the judge determined that Uribe was behind a strategy for witnesses to change their versions with pressures.
