Located just 38 kilometers from Bogotá, the municipality of Choachí, in Cundinamarca, has been recognized as one of the most prominent rural destinations worldwide. In December 2022, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) included it in its prestigious “Best Tourism Villages” list, selecting it among 136 villages from 57 countries for its commitment to sustainable tourism and community development.
Known as “La Puerta del Sol”, Choachí combines a rich history, which goes back to its foundation in 1560, with a vibrant cultural and natural life. His name, derived from the term muisca “Chiguachí”, means “Window of the Moon” or “Our Hill of the Moon”. Visitors can explore their colonial architecture, such as the San Miguel Arcángel parish temple, and immerse themselves in the peasant heritage of the region.
Choachí’s natural environment is one of its greatest attractions. The La Chorrera waterfall, with 590 meters high, is the highest in Colombia and offers an impressive show. In addition, the El Chiflón waterfall, of approximately 55 meters, and the natural hot springs provide options for adventure and well -being tourism. Local cuisine is another prominent point. Typical dishes such as the Plao Corn Arepa, Chiguano Cooking and the picket reflect the culinary tradition of the region. Sagú’s bread, a traditional knead recognized for its energy and digestive properties, is a delight that cannot be missing in the visit.
The OMT recognition not only highlights Choachí’s natural and cultural beauties, but also its commitment to innovation, sustainability and inclusion. The award ceremony was held in Al-ULA, Saudi Arabia, in February 2023. Mayor Carlos Velásquez Garzón received recognition, highlighting the exchange of good practices and the international promotion of the municipality.
