Colombian Foreign Minister: We continue to hold talks to mediate the situation in Venezuela

During a visit to Mexico City, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo said that the government of Gustavo Petro seeks to play a “constructive role” in solving the political conflict in Venezuela.


Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo said that the neighboring country is still in “consultation and dialogue” to mediate the political situation in Venezuela. He said this on August 23 after a visit to Mexico City.

These statements occur after the 22nd of August, Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) validate the results issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE), according to which the ruler Nicolás Maduro had emerged as the winner of the presidential elections of July 28.

“We continue to consult and discuss how we can facilitate and mediate in terms of the situation in Venezuela. You are aware of the statements we have made jointly with Brazil, and we maintain that position,” confirmed the Colombian foreign minister.

According to the official, the government of President Gustavo Petro seeks to have a “constructive role” in the solution of the conflict and maintained that the situation in Venezuela “is always present.” in the conversations, in the debates that we have with countries as close as we are, strategic allies like Mexico.”

Earlier, Petro and Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva proposed rerunning the elections. However, this option was rejected by both the Maduro government and the Venezuelan opposition.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on August 23 that he should “wait for the minutes to be released” before recognizing the TSJ’s decision.
