The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Rosa Villavicencio, stated this Thursday the 11th that the government of Gustavo Petro would be willing to offer asylum to Nicolás Maduro in her country if this facilitates a political transition in Venezuela.
«At the moment of tension that exists, it is necessary to negotiate, and surely if the United States demands a transition, a change, it is something that they must value. If that departure implies that he must live in another country or ask for protection, Colombia would not have to say no,” Villavicencio said during an interview with Snail Radio.
Villavicencio’s statements come amid tensions between the administrations of Donald Trump and Nicolás Maduro, following the seizure of a sanctioned oil tanker by the United States and the military deployment that continues in the Caribbean as part of operations against drug trafficking.
The chancellor emphasized that asylum is a “universal figure” and that Colombia advocates negotiation and diplomatic dialogue to avoid instability in the region. He added that the region of Latin America and the Caribbean have declared themselves a territory of peace, and the Petro government is willing to support a transition, calling on other countries to exercise mediation action.
