Colombian exports to July, the highest since 2012

Colombian exports totaled US$34,561.2 million in seven months of 2022. This was stated this Friday by the National Administrative Department of Statistics, Dane, with the publication of the monthly foreign trade bulletin.

In this way, these become the highest exports for a period from January to July since 2012, when they totaled US$35,542.1 million.

In the same way, the export data for the first seven months of 2022 is slightly higher than the records for the years 2013 (US$33,939.9 million) and 2014 (US$33,048.2 million), according to information provided by the statistical body.

Now, returning to the data for January-July 2022, in this period the country’s external sales grew 59.8% compared to its similar last year, when US$21,633.1 million were reached.

In turn, exports rebounded by 46.7% in the comparison between 2022 and 2019, before the pandemic, when they totaled US$23,557.4 million. Therefore, it can be affirmed that Colombia’s exports are already higher than those in the time before the virus, in part driven by higher energy prices due to the war.

In seven months of 2022, exports of the ‘fuels and extractive industry products’ category increased 98.8% compared to the same period in 2021, totaling US$19,742.5 million. Specifically, oil sales stood out with a rise of 71.3% and coal, 188.9%.

The category of agricultural products, food and beverages registered exports for US$7,070.1 million in this periodthus growing 35.1% versus 2021. Palm oil and its fractions (80.6%) and cut flowers and foliage (28%) represented the highest sales of this group.

In the period January-July 2022, the external sales of the manufacturing group were US$6,071.8 million and registered an increase of 30.2%, compared to January-July 2021. The advance was mainly explained by the increase in external sales of manufactured articles, classified mainly according to the material (53.9%).

When segmenting by products, other than those mentioned, it is worth noting that live cattle saw a 130.7% rise in their sales abroad, billing US$198.6 million in 2022 versus US$86.1 million in 2021.

Roasted coffee, for its part, rebounded its sales by 41%generating US$64.7 million in seven months of 2022 from US$45.9 million in 2021.

The machinery and transportation equipment division grew 29% in this period, while chemical and related products did the same by 19.1%.

Non-monetary gold sales, for their part, fell by 7.3%, from US$1,799.6 million in 2021 to US$1,668.4 million in 2022.

As for destinations, in seven months of the year, The United States is consolidated as the main place for Colombian foreign sales, with a participation of 26.0% in the total value exported. They are followed in their order of participation by Panama (10.6%), India (4.9%), the Netherlands (4.8%), Turkey (4.7%), Brazil (4.2%) and China ( 3.6%).

Regarding behavior abroad, it stands out that sales with the Asian giant fell 47.8% between 2021 and 2022, going from US$2,364.1 million last year to US$1,233 million.
