The Colombian Attorney General’s Office (PGN) announced this Thursday, July 13, that it has opened a “disciplinary” investigation process against the former congressman and current ambassador of that country in Nicaragua, León Fredy Muñoz Lopera, for having participated in a political activity of the government party of Ortega, using party symbols and having given statements praising the Nicaraguan dictatorship.
In a press release published on the official website of the PGNthe institution informs that they have proceeded to initiate the investigative process against the diplomat Muñoz Lopera, “in his capacity as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in the Embassy of Colombia before the government of the Republic of Nicaragua, for his alleged participation in a march in favor of of the revolution that overthrew President Anastasio Somoza Debayle».
The process falls on the Delegate Disciplinary Investigation Prosecutor’s Office 2, For Administrative Surveillance, who points out that “apparently, the official was present at the event convened in the Central American country using symbols of the Sandinista National Liberation Front during his tour.”

The official statement adds that “the control body will investigate the circumstances of time, manner and place of the statements made by Mr. Muñoz Lopera, in which he stated that he is ‘ambassador since September 30 and it is a happy, beautiful, friendly and above all convinced of his revolution. I am pleasantly surprised.’”
The PGN offered the diplomat accredited in Managua to guarantee his right to defense. “The subject to discipline may be heard in a free and spontaneous version if he so requests,” and warns that “against this ruling there is no recourse.”
The PGN of Colombia defines itself as an entity that is in charge of “investigating, sanctioning, intervening, and preventing irregularities committed by rulers, public officials, individuals who perform public functions, and State agencies.”

The Colombian ambassador in Managua provoked an open controversy because on July 7 he participated in a political march organized by the FSLN in the department of León. During his political activity, the representative of Bogotá wore a cap and a scarf with symbols of the party of the Sandinista dictatorship.
In addition, he gave statements to the official media in which he praised the dictatorship, which is accused of crimes against humanity, including the murder of at least 355 Nicaraguans who participated in the 2018 social protests.
Muñoz Lopera has two trials pending in his country for alleged drug trafficking. The Prosecutor’s Office accused him of this crime after having found drugs in his luggage on two occasions.
