Colombian Ambassador in Washington hopes that the visa issue will be normalized in 48 hours

Daniel García-Peña said that the tweets written by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, were not consulted with the Foreign Ministry

The Colombian Ambassador in Washington, Daniel García-Peña, estimates that the issue of suspending the issuance of visas to citizens can be resolved in the next few hours once the Colombian Air Force planes arrive to the territory of the neighboring country with the deportees. of the United States, this as part of the agreement reached by the diplomatic teams of the two countries.

In an interview granted to Snail RadioGarcía-Peña said, however, that he does not dare to say when the visa process will be normalized; although he said that it is expected that on Tuesday, January 28 or Wednesday, January 29, the process could be normalized. He commented that the sanctions on senior officials – which are related to visas – will be lifted for being part of the agreement and said that instructions in this regard are already being given.

He stated that the American team, led by Mauricio Claver-Carone, worked all day Sunday with Colombian officials to overcome the impasse; generated by statements in crescendo on social networks between Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump. In that sense, he explained that on these platforms, many times, terms are used that are not in accordance with diplomatic language and he noted that, despite this, it was possible to give priority to the binational relationship and diplomatic channels.
