Colombia, with the cheapest cities to live in South America

In Latin America the Colombian cities are those with the lowest cost of living, according to the latest Numbeo report. At least with regard to the purchasing power of citizens.

The first place on the list is occupied by the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo. To this are added six other Colombians: Bucaramanga with an indicator of 21.55 on the cost of living index, Cali (24.81), Barranquilla (25.22), Bogotá (26.40), Cartagena (26.71) and Medellín.

The reference city of the index is New York, in the United States, because in the social imaginary it is cataloged as one of the cities with the highest cost of living in the world. ANDIn the investigation, then, the costs of the family basket, transportation, acquisition of goods and other items are compared.

However, the indicator does not include values ​​such as rent, mortgage or housing credit.

Now, Bucaramanga, the city with the lowest cost of living in South America, is 80% cheaper than New York, taking into account the dollar price as a reference. In contrast, Guayaquil is the city where the inhabitants have the highest purchasing power (43.69). This implies that they have a little more than half that of the average New Yorker.

On the other hand, the most expensive city to live in the world is Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda, and another six of the top 10 are located in Switzerland. In the case of the island, it is recorded that it is 50% more expensive than New York. As for the Swiss cities are: Basel, with an index of 116.78; Zug, with 114.75; Zurich, with 112.69; and Lausanne, with 111.93.

This report is published in the midst of a statement by the World Economic Forum warning that cost of living increases they are a problem that is being experienced worldwide and that salaries may not compensate even next year.
