Colombia will receive 25,000 vaccines against Monkeypox

With a subscription bilateral agreement between the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Carolina Corcho Mejía, and the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan, Katsunobu Katō, finalized the process that will allow the country to access an important batch of vaccines against monkeypox.

(Will the mandatory use of masks return in Colombia? This says the Ministry of Health).

This is also reiterated by the Japanese health portfolio, in a statement issued this Friday in which it ensures that the vaccine is the result of a cooperative effort between the industry, academia and the government of this nation.

The process to reach the agreement was carried out following the recommendations made by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In the case of Colombia, the management, whose result exceeds the initial offer made by another proponent for the region of the Americas, included the participation of infectious disease physician Carlos Álvarez, research professor at the National University of Colombia, and WHO representative for Covid studies in the country.

(WHO renames monkeypox: what will it be called?).

In the same way, the accompaniment of a group of experts of the highest level made up of Dr. Hernando Gaitán, director of the Institute of Clinical Research of the National University.

The agreement is part of a research project carried out by several countries with the World Health Organization, including Colombia, which includes the supply of 25,000 vaccines, which will be imported into the country with the management of Invima.

(Monkey smallpox cases rose 330% in Colombia).

Although the Ministry of Health and Social Protection has been following up, monitoring, and controlling the monkeypox outbreak in the country, it is important to understand that vaccination, although it is a fundamental tool, by itself does not prevent contagion, and for this reason it is has arranged for the execution, since last September, of a pedagogical strategy articulated to a risk surveillance and prevention device.

In the same sense, Minsalud has planned a prioritization criterion to access vaccination with infected people and those who have a greater degree of vulnerability. The classification of use of this vaccine in population groups will depend on the epidemiological behavior and availability of biologicals in the country. At this point, it is necessary to remember the recommendation of the WHO according to which neither Colombia nor other countries require for now a massive vaccination against Monkeypox.
