That is why Colombia, together with the Ministry of Defense, the National Navy, Cotecmar and the National Unit for Risk and Disaster Management, signed an agreement for the construction of a new ship.
What will the ship be for?
In dialogue with LA FM, the Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez, highlighted the importance of this project.
“It is an agreement to build a amphibious landing ship that has the capacity to transport 230 tons. It is a ship that is going to be dual. In addition to being able to transport troops and carry out an amphibious assault, it can also transport logistics for disaster relief,” said Minister Sánchez.
According to the head of the Defense portfolio, this ship “is designed mainly to attend events on the Colombian coast, in La Guajira and in the Pacific.”

Emergency support
Another important aspect of this new ship and another that will be acquired by Colombia in the coming months has to do with support for emergency response.
“With the National Risk Management Unit, we are moving forward in acquiring a logistics support shipbut it can transport up to 750 tons and we hope that at the end of February we will have it here in Colombia,” said Minister Sánchez.
In this way, it is expected that the country can react more quickly to different emergencies due to natural phenomena and support other countries on the continent.
“After this entire process, we hope to be, in April, providing greater capabilities to respond to emergencies like the one we had in San Andrés and Providencia or even supporting other countries such as those that were recently affected such as Cuba and Haiti,” Sánchez concluded.
