The Government of Colombia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Providence and VaxThera with the aim of generating the development of vaccines in the country.

“This memorandum of understanding is signed, from which Vaxthera will develop a vaccine production plant in the country, a work that will begin in February 2022 and will be in Rionegro, Antioquia. This investment in alliance with Providence, will allow in June 2022 to have the production of small batches of vaccines to grow its scale and production, not only in covid-19 vaccines, but in other pathologies “, reported the President of the Republic, Iván Duque, adding that Providence is a company that has been developing research on the different variants of covid-19.
This, he added, occurs thanks to what Colombia has been developing with the new vaccine law, and that it has clear incentives for research to arrive, develop and give hope to our country. “This effort is a collective triumph for our country, the work of Procolombia, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Health and the Presidency of the Republic. After 20 years, Colombia recovers its vaccine production capacity ”, Duque added.

The objective with this is that not only is supplied to Colombians but to the region.
According to the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Fernando Ruiz Gómez, “We have an established schedule, defined investments and agreements to have this initiative and others that will surely come, to produce vaccines in Colombia.”
The Ministry of Health and Social Protection since February 2021 formulated a national plan and strategies, “In order to regain sanitary sovereignty for the production of vaccines, which included the strategy of fostering alliances between international companies with production capacity and Colombian companies.”
This is how alliances are sought in countries such as United States, Canada, Israel, South Korea, India and China, under which other projects are expected to bear fruit.
“Since the beginning of the year we formulated the National Plan for the production of vaccines and we have been developing relevant actions with Procolombia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”Ruiz said, and indicated that a possibility of competitiveness for Colombia as a vaccine distribution center in Latin America and the Caribbean opens up.
This, framed in the health security strategy, that will allow the country to face the next pandemic with all the capacities and which will be formulated and delivered to the country through a Conpes.
