Colombia wants to generate Petro-Maduro dialogue at Sheinbaum's inauguration

Jorge Rojas, Colombia’s vice-foreign minister, insisted that peace in Venezuela has a direct impact on the situation in his country. He stressed that Bogotá maintains recognition of Maduro until January 1, 2025.

Colombian Vice Foreign Minister Jorge Rojas said on Friday, September 20, that a new conversation will be sought between the president of that country, Gustavo Petro, and President Nicolás Maduro, taking advantage of the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico on October 1.

Rojas told EFE in Madrid that Colombia is playing an active role, “albeit cautiously,” in finding a solution to the crisis in Venezuela, insisting that political peace in the country directly affects internal peace in the New Granada nation.

“I believe that the inauguration of the new Mexican president will be a good opportunity to reaffirm paths to a political solution for Venezuela,” said Rojas, who is in favor of exploring all avenues of negotiation, including dialogue with the Maduro government, the opposition, countries in the region, the United States and the European Union.

He stressed that Bogotá maintains its recognition of Maduro until January 1, 2025, while insisting on the possibility of publishing the voting records by table and center that validate the victory of the Venezuelan president; which for the neighboring country represents “full transparency” in the electoral processes.

While a solution to the Venezuelan crisis is being sought, Colombia recognises Maduro’s government until January, when the government elected in July is scheduled to take office, but “full transparency” in the electoral process is essential, he stressed.

“We want these results to be reliable so that we can recognize who won the elections” in Venezuela, he stressed, and also advocated for the need for the country to return to the Inter-American Human Rights system.

On the other hand, the Colombian vice-chancellor thanked Caracas for its support for the peace process with the ELN and hopes that the guerrillas will return to dialogue.
