Colombia ‘thaws’ diplomatic relations with Democratic Saharawi

Colombia reactivated, this Wednesday, August 10, diplomatic relations with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, a State with limited recognition, formed by the former Spanish province of Western Sahara, which in turn, the Kingdom of Morocco considers part of its territory.

The announcement was made by the Colombian Foreign Ministry. “The Government of the Republic of Colombia, inspired by the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, reaffirms the validity of the Joint Communiqué signed with the Government of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic on February 27, 1985”, pointed out the institution.

In accordance with the text to which he refers, Colombia agreed to the establishment of diplomatic relations at the level of non-resident ambassadors on February 27, 1985. However, as the Foreign Ministry recalled in 2018, relations were suspended.

Colombia “has supported the efforts of the international community to find a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict over Western Sahara, in accordance with the provisions of the resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council“, referred to the Foreign Ministry in a press release of 2018.

This Wednesday, President Gustavo Petro, together with the designated Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs, Laura Gill, and the Senator of the Republic, Gloria Ines Florez,
held a meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Saharawi Republic, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek; Y the representative ambassador of the polisario front for Latin America, Mohamed Zrug.

This is about the first decision in foreign policy applied by the current government Petro and a clear sign of the rapprochement that, already announced, they will seek to achieve with the countries of Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
