Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered a 25% increase in tariffs on products imported from the United States, after his American counterpart, Donald Trump, applied a series of sanctions to Colombia and officials of its Government.
The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, reported on the afternoon of this Sunday, January 26, that he ordered a 25% increase in tariffs on products imported from the United States: the measure responds to the sanctions imposed by the US president, Donald Trump, in retaliation for the refusal to receive two flights with Colombian migrants.
“He ordered the Minister of Foreign Trade to raise tariffs on imports from the US by 25% (….) North American products whose price will rise within the national economy must be replaced by national production, the government will help in this purpose” Petro announced in a message on the social network X.

Before the order to the Colombian Foreign Trade portfolio, Petro announced that his country “as of today opens to everyoneWith open arms, we are builders of freedom, life and humanity. They inform me that you (Trump) put a 50% tariff on our fruit of human labor to enter the US, I do the same,” he wrote in X.

US sanctions Colombia
Donald Trump announced this Sunday, January 26, a series of sanctions against Colombia; among them, the immediate revocation of visas for Colombian government officials and 25% tariffs on all products made in the neighboring country.
The travel ban and immediate revocation of visas for Colombian government officials and all allies and supporters; 25% emergency tariffs on all Colombian goods entering the United States; enhanced customs and border protection inspections of all Colombian nationals and cargo for national security reasons; and Treasury, Banking and Finance sanctions from the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) are some of the measures.
«This is just the beginning. “We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of the criminals they forced into the United States!” Trump said.
