Colombia presents its climate proposals for COP30 in Brazil

Colombia will bring three proposals to COP30: biodiversity as a solution, an end to fossils and fair financial reform.

Colombia defined the proposals with which it will participate in the thirtieth Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30), which will take place between November 10 and 21 in Belém do Pará, Brazil. The meeting will bring together nearly 200 countries to review the progress of the Paris Agreement, promote a fair energy transition and debate climate financing mechanisms that do not increase the debt of developing nations.

The country will focus its participation on three priorities: recognize biodiversity as a climate solution, advance the progressive elimination of fossil fuels and promote a reform of the international financial system that does not increase the debt of the countries of the Global South. These initiatives will be promoted under the leadership of President Gustavo Petro and the Minister of the Environment in charge, Irene Vélez.

Colombia arrives at this event with a leading roleafter holding the presidency of the COP16 on Biodiversity, from where he has promoted the union of the climate and biodiversity agendas. According to the Ministry of Environment, the country seeks to build consensus that integrates the protection of ecosystems with the well-being of communities.

In this context, The Colombian delegation proposes that COP30 recognize biodiversity as an essential part of the solution to the climate crisis, integrating its conservation into adaptation, mitigation and financing mechanisms. The intention is that global decisions include a comprehensive approach to sustainable development and synergies between climate change and biodiversity.

Another of the central proposals will be promote the progressive elimination of fossil fuels. To advance this objective, Colombia announced the holding of the First International Conference for the Progressive Elimination of Fossil Fuelswhich will take place in April 2026. This process will be aimed at promoting fair energy transitions, with emphasis on economic diversification, social equity and environmental protection.

Finally, the country will defend the need to reform the international financial system to ensure that climate finance does not increase the external debt of countries in the Global South. The purpose is to generate greater fiscal space and release resources that allow strengthening climate action and biodiversity conservation.

According to the environment portfolio, with these three initiatives Colombia seeks to position itself as a relevant actor in the global climate agenda, promoting comprehensive solutions that connect environmental protection with economic and social justice.
