Colombia opens immigration checkpoint on the border with Venezuela

The Colombian government inaugurated this Thursday in Tibú, in the department of Norte de Santander, on the border with Venezuela, an immigration checkpoint with which it seeks to strengthen the presence of the State in this region.

The director of Colombian Migration, Fernando García, said in a statement that the objective of this position is to directly address the “mobility and integration processes and generate prevention strategies against the violation of the rights of both migrants and host populations.” .

The post is intended to “provide information to the Venezuelan population for the biometrics service and the delivery of permits for temporary protection (PPT),” García explained, according to EFE.

The official added that the agency seeks to “become a guarantor of development opportunities by enabling an institutional space that contributes to overcoming deprivation and expanding capabilities.”

It should be noted that the implementation of this checkpoint coincides with the meeting held this Thursday in Caracas by Colombian President Gustavo Petro with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro.
