The National Migration Service (SNM) reported on February 1 that the flow of irregular migrants that enter through the dangerous jungle of the Darién marked a “historical” decrease of 94 % last January, compared to the same period of 2024.

According to the comparative figures published by the entity, in January of this year they entered through the Darien 2,158 migrants, compared to the 34,839 that they did in the same period of 2024.

Vulnerable groups

The Colombian authority warned about the high risks of sexual and gender violence that women and adolescents can suffer. From the total number of migrants who crossed the Darien last year, 126,151 are women, 195,369 men and 72,092 children, adolescents and young people.

He emphasized the “special” vulnerability of women and adolescents, who face high risks of sexual and gender violence in the aforementioned transit, used by migrants to reach Panama from Colombia and enter the United States.

In addition, they found deficiencies in the mechanisms to verify the relationship of minors with accompanying adults, which increases the danger of human trafficking and exploitation.
