Colombia is on the verge of reaching 1,000 electric buses

Over time, electric mobility has become a fundamental pillar for governments and companies to achieve sustainability goals in countries.

(Bogotá will have 1,485 electric buses by the end of 2022).

The need to reduce emissions, improve air quality and reduce pollution ratesis becoming more and more relevant in everyday scenarios and generates a value proposition when buying or acquiring a service.

In the case of Colombia, in recent years this issue has been incorporated especially in public transport services, which according to figures from the Ministry of Transport, is already about to reach a thousand electric vehicles.

As of March 2022, There are 973 electric buses in the Unique National Transit Registry (Runt), of these 868 are incorporated into the TransMilenio company in the city of Bogotá, 69 to Metroplus in Medellín and to a lesser extent the company Mio, in Cali, which has 36 electric vehicles.

Regarding the progress that the country has made, the Minister of Transport, Ángela María Orozco, celebrates that the goal of expanding the electric vehicle fleet has already been exceeded, which was 6,600 by the year 2022, today there are already more than 7,000 in the country.

“We have already exceeded the goal that we set for ourselves as a government. When we arrived at the mandate in July 2018, there were 2,165 electric vehicles that were registered in the Runt between 2010 and 2018”, Orozco pointed out to Portfolio.

(Colombia would have the largest fleet of electric buses in Latin America).

Likewise, the Minister of Transport assured that an ambitious goal was set for the year 2030 in the National Development Plan.

“The medium-term goal is to have 600,000 electric vehicles registered in the Runt by the year 2030”, he stressed.

With this important advance, the country has managed to position itself as a leader in Latin America in electric mobility.

“Adding to the Bogotá metro, the Western Regiotram project and the 80th light rail and the replacement of mass transportation vehicles with gas or electric vehicles, Colombia today is the leading country in the fleet of electric vehicles for the provision of public transport in Latin America, that leadership, of course, is led by the city of Bogotá”, said the Minister of Transport.

This progress has been achieved through the incentives of the Electric Mobility Law, the renewal plan for the vehicle fleet and the replenishment program for the fleet of vehicles, in addition to initiatives such as zero tariffs for electric vehicles and a 5% VAT.

Now, in an effort to improve and expand the electric fleet, the Zhong Tong company announced its arrival in the country this year.

The brand bets on zero energy and low emissions in means of passenger transport. During the first year in the country, the company expects to market a fleet of at least 300 electric units and contribute to the reduction of environmental emissions generated during its operation.

“At Navitrans we managed to bring Zhong Tong to Colombia. The company enters the Colombian market in 2022 with the expectation of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and beginning a clean and renewable energy transition in the means of transport in the country”assured Luis Javier Cardona, Executive Vice President of Navitrans.

PRIVATE VEHICLES

As mentioned above, the eco-friendly trend is here to stay. Companies have had to reincorporate environmentally friendly practices, because when buying it is a very influential factor.

In the case of electric vehicles, more and more people prefer to buy cars with these characteristics.

(Volvo will be in future electric bus tenders in the country).

According to data from the Ministry of Transportation, between motorcycles and electric cars there are approximately 7,537 registrations registered in the Runt.

In figures from Andemos, To date, only in 2022, 1,102 new registrations of this type of car were registered in the country, in 2021, the number reached 333 cars.

Among the buyers’ preference, the Audi, Bmw, Byd Changan, Dongfeng, Gaia and GBM Motors brands predominate.

MOTORCYCLES

According to the Andemos report, the trend of buying electric motorcycles has been increasing exponentially. In 2016, the first association measurement registered 230, by 2021, after five years, 2,683 motorcycles registered in the Runt are calculated.

This figure is still more than double that registered in 2021 for electric cars, which barely reached 1,296, a figure that had a slight reduction compared to 2020.

Now, about motorcycle brands, Colombian buyers prefer to acquire vehicles in the following way: Starker, Niu, Super Soco, Aima, Wolf, Brenson, Ceronte, E-Race, Zongshein and Lvneng.

In 2022, the electric fleet is expected to continue to increase in the country. Bogotá currently leads the list among cities with 3,461 vehicles.
