Colombia, in the average of the “most bureaucratic” countries

The report was drawn up with the purpose of evaluating how much time MSMEs invest in “removing the legally required bureaucratic procedures”.

Thus, the document stated that “Small companies that perform the most representative productive activities in the region spend an average of 548 hours a year to comply with the bureaucratic burden that is required of them to keep operating legally.”

The text emphasizes that, according to the average of the oecd for hours worked per year, between 1,363 and 2,255, “between 25% and 40% of a worker’s working time is destined to meet these demands”.

Regarding the activities in which more hours are spent, 54% is distributed for procedures related to operations; another 30% for employment administration and the remaining 16% for other types of processes.

However, regarding the list by countries, Venezuela, Argentina and the Dominican Republic were the territories where these companies used the most time for these administrative processes. In the neighboring country, 1,062 hours per year were used, while in Argentina there were 900 hours and in the Caribbean country some 745.

In the middle part of the table are Chile, with 470 hours per year; Colombia, where 477 hours were used; in Mexico about 506 hours and in Peru, about 591.

On the other hand, Uruguay, Ecuador, Brazil and Costa Rica were those territories where fewer hours were spent on administrative procedures by companies.

“The results insist on the need for an in-depth review of the institutional and governance structure (…) in order to favor schemes that promote virtuous development dynamics”noted the document that also recommended “make more efficient” the public bureaucracy.
