Colombia: Gustavo Petro and Rodolfo Hernández will fight for the presidency

MIAMI, United States. – The leftist Gustavo Petro and the populist Rodolfo Hernández were the candidates for the presidency of Colombia with the most votes in first round of elections, this Sunday, according to the National Registry with almost 80% of the pre-counted votes.

Both candidates will have to fight in the second round on June 19.

With 78.52% of the votes counted, Petro, candidate of the Historical Pact, obtained 6,567,322 ballots, equivalent to 40.62%; and he is followed by Hernández, from the League of Anti-Corruption Leaders, with 4,516,894 votes, representing 27.94%, according to the EFE news agency based on official data.

Thus, Hernández ousted the right-wing Federico “Fico” Gutiérrez, from Team for Colombia, from second place, who has 1,700,322 votes (23.48%).

Colombians went to the polls this Sunday to elect who will be their new president for the next four years. With Petro’s passage to the second round, for the first time in decades the left could return to Casa Nariño (the seat of government).
