The Colombian Government is analyzing strengthening its trade response to Ecuador after the recent tariff increase announced by that country for imports from Colombia. The proposal being studied by Bogotá contemplates raising the tariffs applied to several Ecuadorian products to 50% and even expanding the list of affected goods.
The initiative is under review within the Executive and arises as a reciprocity measure in the face of the restrictions adopted by Quito. With this, the Government seeks to balance commercial conditions in the face of the new tariffs imposed on Colombian products.
In an interview with Blu Radio, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Diana Marcela Morales, explained that the Government decided to present a proposal that contemplates applying a reciprocal decree with tariffs of 50% to several Ecuadorian products.
According to the official, the measure would include 73 tariff subheadings that currently have a rate of 30%which would go to the new proposed level. Furthermore, the analysis contemplates the possibility of incorporating other products that may generate greater impact regarding the commercial decisions adopted by Ecuador.
A response based on reciprocity
The Colombian Government’s approach is based on the principle of commercial reciprocity, a common practice in economic disputes between countries. Under this approach, Colombia seeks to apply conditions similar to those faced by its exports in the Ecuadorian market.
The discussion arises after the Ecuadorian government, led by Daniel Noboa, announced the increase to 50% of the so-called security rate applied to Colombian products.
A trade conflict that continues to escalate
The trade tension between both countries intensified during the first weeks of 2026, when tariff measures began to be applied that affected the exchange of goods between the two economies.
At first, Colombia responded with 30% tariffs on several Ecuadorian products. However, the new increase announced by Ecuador opened the door to a possible escalation in trade restrictions.
For now, the proposal proposed by the Ministry of Commerce is still under evaluation and must advance in its processing to become an official decree.
