On Thursday, March 23, the Colombian government set up an immigration checkpoint in Tibú, in the department of Norte de Santander, on the border with Venezuela, in order to strengthen the presence of the State in this region hit by violence.
Director of Colombian MigrationFernando García, said that the objective of this position is to address the “mobility and integration processes and generate prevention strategies against the violation of the rights of both migrants and host populations.”
Through a statement, he added that the post intends to “serve, with information to the Venezuelan population, the biometrics service and the delivery of permits for temporary protection (PPT).”
The launch of this verification post coincides with the meeting that Gustavo Petro, president of Colombia, with the official Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, in order to review bilateral relations.
The inauguration of the position was made the same day as the rulers of Venezuela and Colombia, Nicolás Maduro and Gustavo Petro, respectively. They met with an agenda focused on the fight against drug trafficking and collaboration on the border, the opening of the Colombian consulates in Venezuela and the Amazon Summit within the framework of ACTO (Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization).
The meeting was held in Venezuela. Petro arrived in the country accompanied by the head of the Office of the Presidency, Laura Sarabia Torres; the Minister of Commerce, Darío Germán Umaña, the Minister of Transportation, Guillermo Francisco Reyes. Also in the delegation is the Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, Armando Benedetti.
